چکیده

A few years ago I gave a method, mainly based on the second law of thermodynamics, for calculating the maximum efficiency with which light energy can be converted into so-called high grade energy such as work or Gibbs free energy (1) [cf. also (2)]. This efficiency approached zero with decreasing light intensity and with increasing temperature of the system for conversion of light energy. An essential condition is that the light is diffuse (so that its intensity cannot be enhanced by means of a lens), or that the light-converting device is as efficient in diffuse as in non-diffuse light. By applying this method to photosynthesis, it was shown, using certain generally accepted experimental results, that the maximum measurable efficiency of algal photosynthesis must be lower than about 70 %. In a recent paper in this journal (3), Dr. Kahn attempted to demonstrate that my arguments and conclusions were wrong. I quote: "This argument rests on the application of the second law of thermodynamics to the photon absorption process. We wish to point out, however, that application of the second law of thermodynamics to the absorption of a photon by an atom or molecule is not valid, owing to the unique nature of such an interaction." Of course thermodynamics is concerned with macroscopic systems, consisting of billions of molecules, not with a single molecule or a single molecular process. I applied, as far as I am aware, thermodynamics only to macroscopic systems. It is clear from the context that my conclusion, that at least four quanta are necessary to reduce one CO. molecule, should be understood macroscopically. I was also criticized for attributing a temperature to a beam of photons of a certain wavelength range. Without discussing whether such an attribution would be correct or not, I only state that I am not aware to have done this. As far as I can see, Dr. Kahn's

Effect of TiO2 Nanofiber Density on Organic-Inorganic Based Hybrid Solar Cells (RESEARCH NOTE)

Abstract In this work, a comparative study of hybrid solar cells based on P3HT and TiO2 nanofibers was accomplished. Electrospinning, a low cost production method for large area nanofibrous films, was employed to fabricate the organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) and TiO2 nanofibers. The performance of the hybrid solar cells was analyzed for four density levels ...

Further Improvement in Efficiency of ZnO Nanorod Based Solar Cells Using ZnS Quantum Dots as Light Harvester and Blocking Layer Material

Zinc oxide nanorod arrays (ZnO NRs) were grown on the ZnO seed layers via an aqueous solution using hydrothermal method and their photovoltaic properties were investigated. It was found that the growth period of 20 minutes is the optimum condition for ZnO nanorods growth, the cell containing these nanorods was considered as a reference cell. In order to further increase the cell performance, Zn...

Simple Synthesis of In2S3 Nanoparticles and their Application as Co-sensitizer to Improve Energy Conversion of DSSCs

This paper describes synthesis of In2S3 nanoparticles by sonochemistry method and their application to enhance solar cells performance which In2S3 nanoparticles work as co-sensitizer for the first time. In2S3 is a narrow band gap semiconductor (2 eV) with conduction band higher than TiO2. Therefore it can transfer electron to the conduction band of TiO2. The effect of different parameters such ...

Solar cell efficiency enhancement using a hemisphere texture containing metal nanostructures

One major problem of the conventional solar cells is low conversion efficiency. In this work, we have proposed a new design including hemisphere texturing on top and metallic plasmonic nanostructure under the silicon layer to enhance the optical absorption inside the photosensitive layer.    The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used to investigate the interaction of light wi...
